
There’s an interesting meme – an image of commuters of today flicking through a phone and commuters of 50 years ago with their heads buried in a newspaper.
It seems the point being made is that human being have always isolated them selves in public scenarios.
That using a mobile phone today is no different to reading a newspaper or a book 50 years ago.
However, people never drove their cars trying to read the paper.
Or walked down the street and crossed a road reading a book.
Or went to eat a meal with family or friends and pulled out a novel to get them through the meal instead of the company across the table.
Sure, a mobile phone is a much easier way to access information previously in books and newspapers.
But what it does to our social connection is so much worse…
