One of the biggest things that stops people from starting up a business is knowing which business to start.
Should I continue my current career?
Should I go and study something else?
Should I sell products or services?
Do I need a shop front?
The list of questions is endless, and the combinations of what your possible business might look like is infinite.
No wonder people get stopped from doing any thing!
This Is The Wrong Way To Start Up Your Business
Believe it or not, if you want to figure out the RIGHT business for you, this is totally the wrong approach and entirely the wrong process.
These sort of questions are focussing on the HOW, the nitty-gritty details of how you’re going to create your business, how you’re going to make it happen – when you haven’t even figures out what that is.
Your Business Needs A Strategy
In order to figure out the right business for YOU, it’s time to stop, step back and figure out the right business for YOU – which means stating with YOU, not your product manufacturer, or your accountant, or which university course you think you need to do (which you don’t, by the way.)you are actually
Starting with you seems completely counter-intuitive. But when you think about it, YOU really are the most important thing in your business. Your business needs to evolve and operate around you, not the other way around.
There’s a three-step process of figuring out the right business for you.
01 – Identity – Who Are You?
Your identity is who you are. It’s your beliefs, your memories, your experiences, your perspectives on the world, your values.
When have you taken the time, in school or work to really stop and take the time to understand who you are? Seriously.
You don’t – it’s not part of the school or university curriculum, it’s not something that’s ever been explored in any work place.
But understanding your self – you characteristics, strengths, abilities, talents – is a critical foundation for building the right business for you. There’s no point in building n online business if you love working and being around people.
Sure, you probably know little bit about your self, but I’m talking abut really delving deep and being honest with your self about your self.
02 – Reality – Where Are You?
When you know who you are, you need to know where you are.
Because until you know where you are, how the heck can you know where you’re going. Or how on earth you’re going to get there.
So the second step is about getting real with where you are in your life, in every area:
- Social – Who is in your life, and are they supporting you and your forward growth, or are they holding you back?
- Financial – Where are you in terms of savings, debts, living expenses and weekly budgets?
- Physical – What’s really going on with your health, your body, your stress?
- Relational – How are your relationships, with your self, partner, family?
- Vocational – What work are you doing now? Do you love it or hate it, and why?
- Mental – Do you need any additional knowledge or education? In which areas?
- Spiritual – How do you see your self in the world and the universe? How do you connect to things out side your self?
03 – Vision – Where Are You Going?
When you know where you are, you can then figure out where you’re going.
Because you have a point of reference – your current reality.
This is about figuring out what you really want your life and your typical day to look like.
Are you running a large organization with 200 employees? Or, are you running your own business from home?
Is it online or offline. Do you sell goods or services?
This is where you start to figure out what your business actually is.
04 – Alignment – What’s Stopping You?
Alignment is about whether you are actually ready to take the journey from where you are to where you are going.
If you’ve been thinking abut your own business but haven’t been able to get things moving, chances are here’s something keeping you stuck.
This is a big topic – too big to go into detail here.
But, essentially, finding the right business for YOU is making sure that your mind, body and soul are aligned with the direction you’re going.
It’s about tapping into instinct and intuition, and finding a balance between following your heart and your head.
In other words, this needs to STOP being an intellectual process and start being a more of a gut-feel approach so that you are really aligned with what you’re doing.
It becomes a process of passion, rather than a logical series of decisions.
It’s Time To Go Deep
Really figuring out these things can take time and commitment to get real with your self and go deep into what your soul is really craving.
It’s a process that can take years, without any real direction.
You’ll find your self starting and failing businesses that seem like a good idea but then aren’t.
Because you’re starting them from an intellectual process – of how much money they will make, or what will be the easiest, fastest.
Rather than something that evolves from the depths of who YOU really are and becomes a lifelong creative expression of your soul.
Which one do you really want?
