Rarely does any one ask the question…
What do you stand for?
In fact, I’m not sure that I’ve ever been asked in the “real world” – in my family, work, business, school.
There are a select few in my social circle who know what I stand for. They have, in fact, been part of the journey to figure this out over the last few years.
That in its self is interesting – that it’s only been in recent years, during my fourth and fifth decade on this planet, that I’ve only begun to ask this question of my self.
What DO You Stand For?
Most of us can define what we DON’T stand for. What we are against.
When any kind of controversial topic is raised you can very quickly define which side of the fence you sit on: gay marriage, the death penalty, war.
But what is it that you actually “stand for” when you take that stance.
How do you articulate THAT?
Do you even know what THAT is?
Or, is your stance purely something that you’ve been taught to believe?
By family, school and the education system, your community or culture, authority?
Is It What YOU Really Stand For?
Quite often, you are presented with a cause that matters, one way or the other, to some one.
Prevention of cruelty to animals, the local homeless shelter.
Yes, they matter. Of course they matter. They’re doing great work. They’re helping the community
You’re happy to support them, financially or otherwise. Maybe. Maybe not.
These causes matter.
But do they matter to YOU?
What Is It That You Really, Really Stand For?
You understand and are clear what it is that you believe and support – in terms of causes, beliefs or views.
You ensure that you live a life that is aligned with your stand, and your views.
You live a life that is congruent with your beliefs and what you stand for.
In other words, what you stand for is expressed through out your life.
What Does It Mean To Stand For Something?
When you stand for something you take action.
At the extreme, to stand for something means that you will prove it in a number of ways. You’ll:
- Speak for it – If you stand for something you will always support and speak out about your view. You will not hold back your views from fear of what other think.
- Strive for it – If you honestly stand for something, you will speak out but go further. You will take action to ensure that whatever you stand for it is accepted and achieved.
- Suffer for it – If you stand for something you will be willing to suffer for it. Fear of causing offence, being misunderstood or condemned is not a factor in your decision to really stand up for something.
How Far Will You Go?
In the modern world, people are often very busy “doing” and “being busy.”
You often don’t have time to even figure out what you stand for, let alone do something about it.
There’s bills to be paid, deadlines to meet, kids to be be fed, dogs to be walked.
There’s little time to really think about the impact that you’re making, let alone change it..
You’re busy. I get it.
Perhaps it’s the fact that every one is soooo darn busy, that the world has ended up where it is.
- So many people are overworked, stressed, tired, anxious – about money, deadlines, lack of time.
- The planet and our resources are being destroyed on a daily basis in order to give us the cars, TV’s , electronic devices and the “stuff” that supports your life style – and every thing you’re working so hard for.
Perhaps it’s the fact that so few people really know what they stand for that has got us where we are.
People often just don’t think about this stuff any more.
Are You A Part Of The Problem, Or The Solution?
Sure, you might know about issues with the environment, but you really DO need that new phone, or that new car…even though there’s nothing wrong with the old. Or, due to the fact that they’re only designed to last 2-3 years any way.
That’s just how it is, yeah?
The world is what it is.
Or is it?
The world IS what we decide it is.
It’s up to you to stops, step back, take a look at the problems, decide what you stand for, and do something about it.
- Speak for it.
- Strive for it.
- Suffer for it.
That’s the only way any of the “issues” on this planet are going to change.
With every single person deciding what they stand for and doing something about it.
One Person CAN Make A Difference
You might ask what on earth you can do to make a difference.
What impact does one person on this planet actually have?
But let’s take a look at the environmental for example. It’s a big one. A lot of people could understand standing for saving the environment, or at least reducing their impact on it.
Let’s say you’re a single person living alone, and you grocery shop once a week.
- You use 3 plastic supermarket bags a week.
- That’s 106 a year
- That’s 1060 a decade.
If you alone just decide to take your own bags to the supermarket, you’ll reduce your own rubbish and impact on the environment.
Imagine if every household did this?
One Person CAN Make A Difference
It might be a pain to have to remember shopping bags every time you go grocery shopping.
The point here is that you’re actually thinking about what you stand for and what you’re going to do about it.
Rather than just giving it lip service or throwing money at it in the hope that someone else will solve the problem and make it go away.
You’re not going to get it perfect first go.
You’re not going to solve the problems of the world.
Or you might. Who knows.
But you can make a difference.
We wouldn’t be here today if the like of Martin Luther Kind and Nelson Mandela had not stood up, spoken out and strived for what they believed.
So What DO You Stand For?
And What Are You Going To Do About It?
It’s a big question.
Or maybe it’s not.
Maybe it’s really quite obvious if you give your self some space to figure it out.
Chances are, one of those things you deep down stand for is actually the basis of what you need to be doing in your life.
So, just give your self a bit of space and answer the questions:
- What do you stand for? (It could be one major thing or a whole heap.)
- How does this show up in your life today? (Or how doesn’t it?)
- What’s one thing you can do in your life, this week, to stand up, speak out and take action towards something you stand for?
