You have two options.

  1. You can live a life of adventure, excitement, vibrant colour and joy.
  2. You can live a life of mediocrity… beige… average.

If you choose the first one, that’s awesome.

If you choose the second, here’s some tips on how to create the most mediocre and average life possible.

01-Work… Stay In The Same Job For Decades

Finish school or university, get a job, and stay there.

You might be promoted, but that’s starting to resemble ambition and success.

For true mediocrity, you’re best to stay in the one role, doing the same things the same way, every day.

Why?

Because this way you’ll never get to see how other people do things. You’ll get to stay in the same environment, if you’re really lucky the same desk.

You’ll never learn or grow.

See, the thing about working in different places is that you experience different strategies, processes, types and ways of working.

You get to test things out and pick and choose what works for you from a wide range of options.

Or, you could stay in the one place for 20, 30 years, year after year. And, like one organization, in 2017, you can still have your filing system from 1985 and work on a green screen PC with Lotus Notes.

02 – Authority… Don’t Question It

The government knows best for you…

The government will sort it out…

It’s against the law so you better not do it…

Even if you wan to, even if it feels wrong.

If it’s a law, a rule, or comes from someone in a uniform or an “important” person with a title, (like Principal or Prime Minister)…do it.

Unconditionally.

Don’t question it. Don’t answer back.

Just do what you’re told.

Because those people know best fro you. The people in authority that came before them told them so.

And now they’re telling you.

03 – Travel… Don’t Do It

Stay in one spot.

Stay in the same city if you can, the same suburb would be great, and if you can stay in the same house for most of your adult life, you are so on the way to mediocrity.

Avoid holidays or weekends away.

Do your best to stay in the same environment.

If you have to go out, go to the same restaurants, over and over. Pick one, and have the same meal every time.

What you’re trying to avoid here is experience a richness of textures, tastes and sounds.

Why would you want to bustle your way through a Turkish bazaar, or ride a camel through an Egyptian desert, or talk to a random Spanish traveler while travelling through Italy…

When you can stay at home and eat a $10 lasagne at the pub every Friday, having the same conversations with the same people….over and over.

Never travel. travel.

04 – Money… Buy Stuff You Can’t Afford

Live in debt. Constantly.

As soon as you can.

From the huge university or college debt that hangs over you from graduation.

In fact, if you can rack up a few credit cards to live off while you’re studying, even better.

Now you’re locked into a job for the next 5-10 years to pay thjs off.

Then you can get a car, a house, and while that’s racking up, fill it with electronics that break as soon as you’ve paid them off and the warranty wears out.

Once you’re on the debt cycle, you’re now kind of trapped, working a9-5, 5 days a week, or more. Stress. Worry.

No time for travel. Or fun.

But you never questioned authority – and that’s who told you this was the way to live.

So you must be doing something right.

05-Friends…Hang Out With People You Don’t Like

Hang out with the same people you went to school with.

That’s the perfect way to retain the same ideas and values and really stunt your own growth.

Especially if you never move out of the town you were born in.

If you like them, that’s ok. It means you’re probably holding each other in the same place equally,.

If you don’t like them, there’s a part of you that wants to grow and evolve and move on.

DON’T!

If you want to stay mediocre, resist the urge to evolve.

Keep going to the same places with the same people, year after year, because you’re scared of what might happen if you move on.

Stay scared!

It’s totally safe and secure.

Why would you want to meet new people any way? They might open you up to a huge array of new experiences.

06 – Fit In

Mediocrity is nothing to be ashamed of.

Most people live there.

So if you choose the path of mediocrity and beige, and release any idea of a life of colour and vibrancy and adventure…you’ll be fine.

You’ll fit right in…

Unless you don’t…
