Ask and you shall receive.
It’s been thrown around on Instagram and written about in books, and spoken about on stages for years. By a lot of people, and experts and gurus – who seem to have the whole thing figured out.
And for years I’ve kind of understood what they’ve been saying and doing what I’m “supposed” to do and asking and asking and waiting…
And I’m still waiting to receive most of that stuff, those things, I’ve asked for so many times.
Just like they told me.
You’ve probably heard of that book, The Secret, which showed its self in 2006, and brought this whole concept of “manifestation” into the mainstream.
Again, the experts told us how simple it was.
Be clear about what you want, visualise it, affirmation it, and allow it to come. Your reality comes from your mind, you create from what you think and feel. So think about what you want and you’ll get it.
It gave us hope.
So a tonne of people all over the world got out their meditation mats, and created their vision boards, and visualised, and recited their mantras and affirmations, over and over and over.
And stopped, in many cases.
The Problem With Asking
There’s a few problems here. A few things they left out and, shall we say, slightly misunderstood, misinterpreted?
See, the thing about asking is…
In most cases, we’re told literally to ask for that thing that we “want” or “desire,” or “choose” to have. (I wrote about the problems with want and desire separately here.)
- I want a pony.
- I want a Ferrari.
- I want a knight in shining armour.
- I want. I want. I want.
So, to take you out of wanting, you’re told to state it “as if.” As if you already have it.
- I have a pony.
- I have a Ferrari.
- I have a knight in shining armour to take me away from all of this.
You don’t believe it.
I call this…
“The gap” is that space between where you are and where you “want” to go.
And if that gap is so big, so outside your reality, that it seems impossible, to your logical mind, no matter how many affirmations, how many mantras, how many vision boards you put in front of it, it’s just going to say…
“No way. No way can that happen.”
Because the gap is too big. There are too many steps from here to there, and deep down you don’t believe it.
So you’re never going to get it.
And anyway, whether you believe it or not…
You’re Asking For The Wrong Thing
See, the whole premise of asking for what you want has mostly been taught about asking fro the thing, the result, the outcome, the expectation, of what you want.
So you ask for it, and then sit in a space of wanting and yearning, and disappointment, waiting for the “universe” to bring it.
But what if, all this time, you’ve been asking for the wrong thing…
Which is why you’ve never been able to receive it, even when you feel like you totally believe it and you’re allowing it.
What if, asking for the thing or outcome is not what asking means.
What if asking, is about asking the right questions to discover what you need to do to create what you’re asking for.
The Thing They Forgot
At the end of the day, we are spiritual beings having a physical experience in a physical body in a physical world.
Sitting and meditating and visualising under a tree might seem like a lovely way to get every thing you want.
But you have to take Action.
That’s what all the “manifesters” seem to have forgotten.
In order to create in the physical world, you have to take action, one step at a time, to move towards that thing you want in your life.
And the way you know what action to take, is by asking for it.
What is that’s what the asking is all about?
Ask For Your Action – Be, Do, Have
What if visualisations and affirmations were great, in terms of defining what it is that you desire to create.
But in order to actually create it you don’t ask for that thing, you ask the “universe” for your next step, your next action.
- Who do I need to BE to have…
- What do I need to DO to have…
- What’s it going to take for this to show up…
- What else is possible…
- What else has to happen for…
In this instant, now.
What is that’s what having that thing now was about. Asking who you need to be, what you need to to, and then being it and doing it NOW, to have it.
What if that’s what they forgot.
That, in every moment, of every day,
You have to ask who to BE and what to DO, right now, in this moment, and then when the universe whispers your answer, then choose that, and that’s how you’ll HAVE it.
That’s what you have to ask, in order to receive.
It’s worth a go…
