How long have you been talking about starting up a business?
And how long are you going to keep talking about starting up a business?
Have you let life, excuses, and other people’s priorities get in the way of what YOU want?
And how long are you going to keep letting life, excuses and other people’s priorities get in the way of what you want?
There’s a lot of reasons why we put off starting up a business. I’ve heard it all. I’ve said it all.
- I’m too busy. There’s not enough time.
- Or money.
- I don’t have the energy. I’m too tired.
And the list goes on.
These are all superficial excuses. They can be totally overcome with a few simple lifestyle changes.
But once you overcome these, and actually start moving, the same obstacles keep coming up for people, over and over.
Especially when you realise that it’s NOT all about the money – you could stay in your corporate job for that – and that in fact, you know there’s something else, something bigger that you KNOW you should be doing, and that you want to create a business around but:
- You don’t know what your business is.
- You know a lot of “bits” about business but you can’t figure out how they go together.
- You don’t know where to start or what to do.
So you do nothing. Or you play hit and miss, and hope that something works.
I’ve got some news…
Trial And Error Is Not The Answer
Trial and error seems to be one of the biggest mistakes that women, especially, make in business. We go, all in, guns blazing, giving it every thing we’ve got. Until we realise it’s just not working.
Let’s have a look at each of these issues one at a time, and figure out how to overcome them.
01 – You Have No Idea What Your Business Is
This is hard. I’ve been here.
It took me years to figure out what my business really was. I knew it had something to do with bringing a whole heap of stuff together, but I couldn’t articulate it and I had only a sense of it. Vague? You bet it was.
I pondered on names and websites. I started multiple blogs with some different themes. I started an ebay business, a project management consulting business, an architectural recruitment business amongst other things.
They all seemed part of it – but they weren’t IT.
So I stopped. And started. And stopped. And started. Until I figured it out.
So What Is Your Business?
[ctt template=”1″ link=”k5v5T” via=”no” ]Your business is a unique expression of you. It’s a combination of all the awesome bits of you put together in a way that adds massive value to the world.[/ctt]
The key, is to figure out what those bits are and how they go together.
And it’s not that hard.
Which leads me perfectly into the second obstacle faced by so many business start ups.
02 – You Know A Lot Of “Bits” About Business But Aren’t Sure How They Go Together
If you’ve ever worked, you’ve worked in business.
And when you’re in an environment you cannot help but be influenced by it.
So by default, you know stuff about business –stuff that you don’t even realise you know.
Or stuff, that you know you know, but you don’t know what to do with it.
For example, you may be really clear on your product or service, but don’t know how to market or sell it.
Or, you might be great at networking and dealing with people, but don’t know WHAT you’ll sell to them.
You might have worked in awesome businesses and seen fantastic teams and systems in place – or maybe you’ve experienced the opposite. And you’ve probably had all sorts of training along the way.
Regardless of your past experience, you’ve picked up a heap of business “bits” along the way – experience, knowledge, theory and practical application.
The problem is you don’t know what they are or how they go together.
Because big business is set up that way – a lot of different people, working individually in different silos – often with little understanding of the big picture.
So What Is The Big Picture?
The big picture is simple.
The big picture of business includes 7 key pieces that go together in a very particular way. They are the same for every business.
And they are simple – but big business doesn’t want you to know that.
So they keep all the bits separate – in silos.
BUT, when you understand these 7 ingredients and how they go together – you can very quickly identify the pieces of the puzzle that you do have, and the pieces that you don’t, and all you have to do is fill the gaps with a bit of knowledge and practical application.
It’s really quite simple.
Which leads me to the final obstacle faced by so many people. This one keeps us stuck like a deer in headlights.
03 – You Have Absolutely No Idea About Where To Start Or What To Do
Starting up a business can seem so overwhelming.
There’s a website, and emails, and clients, and networking functions and phone calls and finding a product to sell, and then doing the work.
Just thinking about it seems exhausting and can lead to erratic and split focus across a whole lot of things – none of which move forward properly.
Where Do You Start And What Do You Do First?
Building a business for the long terms takes time. And focussed effort.
What if I told you there is a really simple roadmap to creating a business that spells out all the steps, one by one, in an easy, manageable, specific order?
It addresses the 7 Business Key Stones we talked about earlier, with a series of processes to get you from where you are to where you want to go.
It starts with the big picture and identifying what you want, and then moves into developing specific strategies that are right for you.
Building A Business Needs A Systematic And Strategic Approach
The biggest challenge I had in my own business journey was being able to see the big picture – the helicopter view. Where I could look down and understand all the pieces that I needed and how they were going to work for me and fit together.
What was missing from all of the business strategies and programs out there was whether they were right for me and how they fitted into the puzzle of MY business. The overview.
That’s what leads to hit and miss.
When you jump into the doing and the busyness without understanding the big picture.
Getting clear on YOUR big picture, and developing your own roadmap will help you to know, with absolute certainty:
- What your business is;
- What the pieces of YOUR business are and how they come together; and
- Where you need to start and what you need to do next.
