Are you ready to start up your business?
How are you going to know if and when you are?
This is one of the biggest obstacles that stops so many women from actually starting up a business, and today we’re going to look at how to know when you’re ready to start.
[Hi, I’m Liz Watt from lizwatt.com and the Business Start Up program.]
First of all, I’m going to give you the bad news, so we can get that out of the way. I’ll let you in on a little secret…
You’ll NEVER Be Ready To Start Up Your Business
I know, I can feel you all reeling back in horror.
But here’s the thing.
[Tweet “You’re never going to have every thing you need all lined up perfectly and working properly. ~~ Liz Watt”]
That’s the thing about starting up a business. In fact, that’s the thing about any thing you’re doing for the first time.
It’s messy. It’s confusing and it can get overwhelming.
And, the minute you think you’ve got one thing sorted, something changes…the technology, the market, your whole idea or business philosophy. You.
That’s the most frustrating thing of all.
Things change and evolve constantly – and part of the game is being able to respond and change and evolve with it.
Business Really Is A Journey
And the Business Start Up phase of the journey involves all the Preparation. Figuring out, what your business is, what you want it to look like, who you want to work with, what you want to sell, how much you’ll sell it for.
The Preparation or start up phase is all about figuring out what you need to know, what you do know and what you don’t know.
Unfortunately, the real truth of it is…
You’ll Never Be Ready Until You Start
You don’t know what you don’t know until you start, and figure out what you don’t know.
Does that make sense?
Let me flesh that out a little.
You don’t know what you don’t know. Right now, you only know the things that you know, that you’ve been taught, that you’ve learned, that you remember.
You can prepare all you like, but until you start the journey of business, you don’t know the next thing you need – the next tool, the next bit of knowledge, the next strategy or tactic.
It’s literally like preparing for a journey to walk across the country. You might predict there’s rivers to cross, bridges to build, that there’s hot and cold climates to deal with, deserts to walk across, and mountains to climb. You can stay at home trying to figure out all the scenarios that you might have to deal with and preparing for it ALL.
You can do some basic preparation, take the basic resources to get you started, get walking, and figure it out as you go.
In other words…
You can stay where you are preparing and studying and learning and thinking about it.
Or, you can start doing it.
Now, I know this can be a challenge.
Believe me, I am an eternal student, constantly learning and wanting to know more.
And I spent a lot of time preparing along the way. I learnt a lot of great stuff about business before I got started.
And I do not regret any of it.
BUT – I invested a lot of time and effort and money to learn a lot of strategies and skills and information that isn’t actually right for me and my business. I don’t use it.
It’s kind of like, I learned how to deal with hot flat, desert climates and icy, mountainous, snowy climates, when my journey, or my business, was never going any where near the snow.
The key to getting started right now, is…
Figure Out Your Destination
What do I mean by that?
Well, instead of learning every survival skill for every kind of terrain and climate, I just needed to make a few decisions first.
All I had to do was take a little bit of time at the start to figure out the overall strategy of my journey.
Instead of catering for every possible scenario, and trying to get every thing sorted out I just had to make the decision -was I headed to the hot dessert, or the mountainous snow?
When I made that decision, then all of a sudden I had a lot less possibilities to deal with.
Suddenly I’d cut out half the skills I had to learn, half the equipment I’d have to buy and drag along, and half the energy, time and money I’d have to invest in learning and buying all this stuff – that wasn’t necessarily going to help me.
Suddenly, I could be a lot more focussed in my preparation.
So, here’s the good news…
Starting A Business Is About Taking It One Step At A Time
And the first step is actually deciding to start.
Making that commitment to your self that you’re actually going to do it.
You’re going to start up your own business, regardless of how long it’s going to take, all the things that you don’t know, and all the things that scare the heck out of you.
That’s it. That’s the first step.
Make the decision.
That’s all you have to do today. And then tomorrow, you take another step. And another. And another.
Before you know it, things will be happening, and you’ll be growing your own business.
It’s All About Consistency
Starting up your business is about getting really clear on what it is that you want to create and then doing one thing every single day to move you towards it.
But it’s about doing the right things, that are right for you.
If; you’re stuck in the business and the doing of life, then it might be time to just stop, pause, take a step back and look at the big picture. At what it is exactly that you want to create.
So here’s the good news…

Wherever you are is perfect – it’s the exact right place form which to take your next step.
